An overview of genome modification methods and the transgenic animal models for human complex diseases, the pros and cons of model systems, the history and recent progress of preclinical therapy research in the transgenic animal models is presented. The current and emerging challenges in different medicine fields and ways to address these challenges using animal models as well as the opportunities that non-mainstream animals offer for current and future biomedical research are discussed.
